About Us

Originally established as Steep and Cheap in the early 90's the store quickly became established as the Snowboard store in Queenstown offering great product and service. In 2000 S & C became Alta. In the late 90's and early to mid 2,000's Alta was voted top Snowboard retailer in NZ.

In 2010 Alta took on new owners and a new location moving to the Sofitel building. Our goal is to maintain the reputation that Alta had in the past as the top snow retailer in NZ and take that further while growing the summer market which has seen a real growth in mountainbiking in Queenstown.

The staff are all passionate riders. Most have done a number of back to back winters and have so much knowledge and passion for the industry. Many of the winter staff do back to back winters with a few of them being instructors as well. If these guys (and girls) dont know something about snow product then its probably not worth knowing. We have a slightly different roster for summer with these guys loving mtb. Queenstown's turning (if not already turned) into the Southern Hemisphere's premium mtb destination with a Gondola assisted bike park, World Class Dirt Jump Park - Gorge Rd, epic back country missions and fast flowy trail networks.

Our philosophy on the brands we stock is to choose the best brands (not necessarily the biggest) and stock pretty much their full range. In the brands we stock you probably wont find another store in the country that has more selection of that brand than we do. If you want to know about any product, the best trails or anything then just ask - we love to help.
